Indian Red Cross Society

Overview

The International Red Cross Society was conceptualised by Sir Henry Dunant after his incidental exposure to the plight of thousands of helpless , wounded soldiers as an aftermath of war in Italy and their near total lack of medical help. The Red Cross Society was formally established in 1863 in Geneva to offer medical relief to the war victims in the battlefield. The society gradually earned the distinction of a global body selflessly working for the welfare of suffering humanity.

The Indian Red Cross Society was established in 1920 with its headquarters in New Delhi. The Hon'ble President of India is the President of the Indian Red Cross Society and at the State level the Hon'ble Governor is the President. The Madhya Pradesh Chapter came into existence in 1956 with its office in Shivaji Nagar. Presently there are 1100 branches in India. In Madhya Pradesh there are 52 District Branches and 63 sub district branches.

The Indian Red Cross Society , M P State Branch , Bhopal is working under the 7 principles of Red Cross Society which are :- Seven Fundamental Principles of Red Cross

  • 1. Humanity : The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavors, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples.
  • 2. Impartiality : It makes no discrimination as to nationally, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It endeavors to relieve the suffering of individuals, being solely by their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress.
  • 3. Neutrality : In orders to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature.
  • 4. Independence : The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the Movement.
  • 5. Voluntary service : It is voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.
  • 6. Unity : There can be only one Red Cross Or Red Crescent in any one country. It must be open to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.
  • 7. Universality : The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.

Milestones

The Red Cross Society initiated its humanitarian activities in Madhya Pradesh in 1956. The State Headquarters are located in Shivaji Nagar where one of the largest Red Cross Multispeciality Hospital is rendering services to large number of suffering humanity at very subsidised cost. The MP State has the distinction of having the largest number of District and Subdistrict Branches in the country.

Deaddiction Centres are being run in Indore, Neemuch, Sagar, Ratlam to bring the derailed section of society back into the mainstream and help the society at large.

Red Cross also manages Schools for Deaf and Dumb Children at Dhar ,Neemuch and Morena. Leprosy relief Centres are set up at Dhar, Jabalpur,Indore, Satna, Narsingpur, Mandsaur, Rewa and Barwani to help ameliorate the suffering of Leporsy patients. Red Cross also runs Dharamshala or Rest Houses for the relatives of the patients in the District places at Shivpuri ,Guna , Ratlam , Gwalior , Satna, Damoh and Badwani.

Disaster Management and Assistance to the people affected by Earthquakes, Floods Famines is another area where Red Cross makes its presence by selfless work and help to the afflicted populace.
